Since its foundation, AEGEE has been involved in projects related to languages and intercultural learning. Building Language Bridges presents AEGEE-Europe's celebration of the European Day of Languages, which will take place in autumn annually.

By celebrating the European Day of Languages, we would like to promote the rich cultural heritage of Europe and foster mutual understanding among different language communities all over Europe with a special focus on young people.

Our project is aimed at motivating the European youth to learn different languages, especially not the very common ones.

By organizing simultaneous language courses and different types of language related events with broad media coverage all over Europe we would like to bring international attention to the importance of language learning and raise awareness among the general public and decision-makers.

As our celebration of the European Day of Languages will involve thousands of young people from all over Europe and target a broad variety of languages spoken inside and outside the European Union, the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe will be made visible to the European citizens. The EDL encourages them to focus on the advantages of language learning.

Information provided in the “Language Fairs” is a first step in learning a new language and will motivate young people to dive further into it. By being multilingual they can understand other cultures better, open up their minds and feel increasingly European, and therefore can participate actively in the European democratic process.

EDL aims to:

-          To alert the public to the importance of language learning

-          To increase awareness and appreciation of all languages

-          To encourage lifelong language learning

EDL in Florence

Since 2003 AEGEE-Firenze celebrates EDL every year in November, simultaneously with the others AEGEE antennae all over Europe. AEGEE chose to celebrate this day in November, instead of September, because of organization issue, since most of the students are not at university in September.

EDL in Firenze consists in a language and cultural seminar, where foreign students, in particular Erasmus students, are invited to introduce their language and their culture through a short presentation on the most interesting and attractive aspects.

Every participant has about 20-30 minutes and he is free to prepare an introduction on his own language and culture, using creativity in order to involved all the audience. Starting from general information on language, alphabet and pronunciation, pointed out the characteristic aspects, then we have useful sentences to build a sort of language survival kit for the most adventurer travellers that wish to start speaking new languages. Some of the participants also prepare short conversation to have directly with the audience, some of them sing, or play songs, or read poems.
Thanks to EDL and others events connected ( such as :

Language Tandem) AEGEE-Firenze involved a great number of young people and motivates them to study languages and to be interested in others cultures.
